For 2025, I’ve committed to a no-new-starts approach for my cross-stitching endeavors. Instead of diving into new patterns, I’ll set progress goals for each of my works-in-progress (WIPs) and focus on achieving those goals—or perhaps even completing some projects! To make this process more engaging, I’ve purchased a spinning wheel from Amazon to help decide which project to work on next.

First Up: Rosena Disery 1820

The spinning wheel landed on Rosena Disery 1820, a historical sampler reproduction charted by Works by ABC. While samplers were common during the early 19th century, particularly among school-aged girls as part of their curriculum, Rosena’s work stands out for its rarity. This sampler is one of only two known to have originated from the New York African Free School.

Founded in 1787, the school provided education for children of slaves and free people of color in New York City. This sampler offers a vital glimpse into history, and Arlene from Works by ABC has done a remarkable job capturing the story behind both the sampler and Rosena herself.

Project Details

When I started, I had already completed two motifs and some of the lettering. My goal was to finish the lower third of the pattern, which included two additional motifs and more lettering.

Stitching Challenges and Tips

Stitching the lettering in 1 over 1 isn’t difficult, but it does involve a lot of stopping and starting, as I aim to avoid carrying threads across open spaces on the back. This method ensures a cleaner finish but can feel tedious. To combat common issues like stitches slipping under the weave of the fabric, I use a light hand when tightening stitches. This technique is especially helpful when working over 1 on linens and evenweaves.

Progress and Reflection

I’m thrilled to report that I reached my progress goal in just two weeks! The spinning wheel added a fun layer of excitement, motivating me to complete my goal and spin for the next project.

Rekindling the Stitching Bug

Have you ever lost your stitching bug? For me, 2024 was not a productive year for cross-stitching, and I’m determined to change that in 2025. Tools like the spinning wheel have reignited my enthusiasm, and I’m eager to keep the momentum going.

What about you? Have you used any tools or techniques to reignite your passion for a hobby? I’d love to hear what worked for you and whether it brought back the joy you were seeking. Let’s make 2025 a year of progress and creativity!

With love and creativity,

Jacquie
